Chapter Thirteen
Morning arrived, and they showered, dressed, grabbed their luggage, and went downstairs to meet the group for their final meal. Breakfast was fun. People were exchanging phone numbers and email addresses. Maggie and Alex hadnât connected with anybody like that. They met people, and theyâd enjoyed their company, but they had been too into each other to get to know anyone that well. So they ate their breakfast and watched the goings-on of others.
When breakfast was over, they hugged Teresa and thanked her for a wonderful vacation. Alex tipped her handsomely then they went about their day. They stowed their luggage at the conciergeâs station so they could spend a few hours wandering through the city. Their flight left that afternoon, so they didnât have a lot of time.
âWhere do you want to go? What do you want to see?â Alex said.
âIâd really like to go to the Holy Mary of Grace Monastery. Iâd like to see Da Vinciâs Last Supper as long as weâre here.â
âSounds good to me.â
They got in a taxi and arrived at the monastery. They went to the refectory of the convent and saw the painting. It was even more beautiful than Maggie had imagined. Her eyes watered as she looked at it. It was one of the holiest occasions in her Church caught with paint.
âYou okay?â Alex said.
âI will be. I just get chills looking at it.â
âWell, take as long as you need.â
The crowds hadnât arrived yet, so Maggie took her time gazing at the mural.
As more people filed in, Alex touched Maggieâs arm.
âHey, more people are coming in now.â
âHuh? Oh. Okay. We can go now.â
They walked out into the afternoon air.
âWe donât have time to see anything else,â Alex said. âWe need to get our bags and head to the airport.â
âSounds good to me. Oh, Alex. Thank you again so much for giving me this opportunity. It means the world to me.â
âMy pleasure. Anything for you, my love.â
The sound of the words filled Maggie with joy. And then confusion. How could she love Alex and Christ? She didnât know, but she knew she did. She loved them both fiercely and hated the idea that she would someday have to choose between the two of them.
The flights back home were uneventful. They flew into LAX, had dinner, then caught their puddle jumper home. They spent the night at Alexâs house where they made sweet love all night. They made the most of their last night together. They took turns pleasing each other until, exhausted, Maggie fell asleep in Alexâs arms.
Late Saturday morning, Alex dropped Maggie off at the convent. Maggie was sad to say good-bye but took solace in the fact she would spend the next afternoon with Alex. She let herself into her room, where she found a note from Reverend Mother welcoming her home and asking her to stop by her office on Monday to show her pictures. Maggie smiled. She had plenty of pictures to share. That was for sure.
Maggie unpacked then dropped to her knees in front of her crucifix.
